Frequently asked questions

Repair & Maintenance
What is the board test?
It is the contact-reversal check. A short length of 2x4 lies flat on the floor in the middle of the opening and the door is closed from the wall button. When the bottom edge meets the wood, the door should halt and travel back up without help. Passing shows the opener's down-force and travel limits are set to back off from something solid. The technician never substitutes a hand or foot for the board. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Do you adjust the springs during a tune-up?
Springs are inspected and lubricated during a tune-up, and the balance test tells us whether they are carrying the door's weight properly. Changing their tension is a separate, deliberate job: the door is clamped to the track, winding bars are used on a torsion spring, and the technician works from a stable position. If the balance check shows the springs need adjustment or replacement, you receive that as its own recommendation with its own quote. Garage Door Tune-Up
Will the opener need adjusting afterwards?
Sometimes, but not always. Once the door runs true by hand, the trolley is reconnected and the opener is checked against its own travel limits and force; those are only reset if that check shows they have drifted, since many openers need no force change after a repair like this. The reversal is then checked against a block laid in the door's path and by interrupting the photo eyes from a safe distance. If the opener strained hard during the event, its arm and bracket are checked too. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How long does it take to get a replacement section?
Sections are made to order for a specific model, size, position and colour rather than kept in stock, so there is a lead time from the manufacturer. It varies with the maker, the colour and the season, and the technician confirms the expected timing when the order is placed. In the meantime the door is left in a safe state, either in normal use or braced and closed, depending on the damage. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What is the difference between two-inch and three-inch rollers?
The figure is the wheel diameter, and it has to match the track. Residential sectional doors run on two-inch track and take a two-inch wheel; commercial doors can run on either two-inch or three-inch track, so the wheel is matched to what is actually installed. Wheel size has little to do with noise, which comes from the wheel material and bearings. The technician measures the track and the existing wheel before ordering so the set fits, since a mismatched wheel either jams in the channel or rattles around in it. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Should every hinge be replaced, or only the broken one?
It depends on what the inspection finds. Hinges age at similar rates, so a cracked one is often the first of several, especially on the lower joints where salt and moisture collect. The technician checks each hinge and tells you which are cracked, worn at the pin or bent, which are loose and only need tightening, and which are sound. Replacing the worn group in one visit saves the door a run of separate call-outs. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Can worn rollers damage the track?
They can, and it is one of the slower ways track goes wrong. A wheel that no longer turns on its bearing skids along one lip of the channel, and over thousands of trips that pressure pries the lip open until a roller can slip out. When a spread section is closed up, the rollers that caused it are replaced at the same time, otherwise the new profile opens again within a season. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Can a cable be too long or too short for the door?
Yes, and both cause trouble. A cable that is too long runs out of drum groove and starts a second layer over the first, which wears it and throws the balance off near the top of travel. A cable that is too short leaves the door hanging out of level or the drum without a secure wrap. The correct length comes from the door height, the drum and the lift type, so the technician measures rather than guesses. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
The wall button works but none of my remotes do. What happened?
Three things account for most of these. The wall control has been put into lock mode, sometimes by a child or a visitor, which blocks all remotes until it is released. The opener's memory was cleared, usually by someone pressing the learn button while trying to program a new remote, so every remote needs programming again. Or the receiver in the head unit has failed. The first two are simple settings; the third is a part. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Why does the door open only partway and stop?
Three causes account for most cases. The up travel limit has drifted short and needs turning out. The door has become heavy or stiff somewhere in its travel, so the operator senses resistance and stops, which points to the springs, rollers or track. Or the chain has slipped out of phase with the motor, in which case the limit screws have no effect and the chain must be re-set on the sprocket with the trolley at the closed position. What information helps when I book a belt-drive repair?
The make and model printed on the motor head, roughly how old the operator is, what the belt is doing and what it sounds like, when it started, whether the red cord has been pulled and whether anyone has adjusted anything. A photograph along the rail showing the belt, and one of the label, settle most questions before the visit. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will the buttons built into my car work with the new opener?
Nearly always, yes. The in-car transmitter is taught to the new operator using the learn button on the head unit, much like a handheld remote. Some older vehicles predate the newest rolling-code systems and pair through a small repeater or bridge that the technician can supply. Bring the car into the driveway on installation day so it can be programmed and tested before the technician leaves. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
How is the old door removed?
Technicians disconnect the operator, stabilize the assembly and control the spring system before detaching cables or high-tension fixtures. Sections are supported and separated in sequence, followed by track and related hardware. The agreed scope states whether removed materials are taken away, while site protection keeps nearby finishes and belongings clear during dismantling. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can decorative handles and hinges be added?
Decorative hardware can often be included when it is approved for the chosen door and installed in the specified locations. The order records finish, pattern and placement so the exterior remains balanced. Functional lifting hardware is a separate matter and must provide a safe gripping point. Added pieces should not obstruct section joints, tracks, seals or the door's path. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Why are both positive and negative pressures important?
Wind can push a closed door toward the garage or create suction that draws it outward. Those actions load sections and hardware differently, including rollers, hinges, tracks, and attachments at the jambs. A suitable configuration addresses both directions using the pressure values and details established for the project rather than treating reinforcement as resistance in only one direction. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Is a carriage-house door the same as a pair of swing-out doors?
Usually, no. A carriage-house sectional door is divided horizontally and follows tracks into the garage, while its panel pattern and decorative hardware suggest two hinged leaves. True swing doors move outward or inward on side hinges and need different clearances. Confirming which operation you want is the first selection decision because it changes the entire door system.
